“Tuxedo shirts generally come in two types of collars: traditional point collars and wing collars. The wing collar reveals the band of the bow tie going around the neck. Either shirt is acceptable for a classic tuxedo style. You can also select either a plain front or a pleated front.” Also, note that a tuxedo shirt should have a covered placket so the buttons don’t mess up the pleat lines.
Wearing a bow tie vs. a modern long tie:
For those that love watching the Oscars, you may have noticed a trend where wearing a long tie or no tie at all is acceptable with wearing a tuxedo. Although times have changed, we still recommend wearing a classic bow tie that you tie yourself or to give it a more modern look, wearing a classic black or silver silk long tie is acceptable. Also note that matching the fabric of your bow tie or long tie to your lapel and stripe on your pants is a must. For a bit of flair, a velvet bow tie can look great against satin or grosgrain lapels and pant stripes.
For the guys out there that need a little help with the bow tie area, here is a video clip on how to tie your own bow tie.
Wearing patent leather shoes is acceptable to wear with a black tuxedo, but we recommend wearing the kind that lace up. Shoes should be plain or round-toed. Try your best to avoid tassels or square-toed shoes. If you’re a guy that loves his Texas roots, we have to note that wearing cowboy boots is a major NO for a black tie event. Sorry cowboys, but you’re going to have to save your boots for another time.
We find that men commonly question themselves on whether or not to wear a watch with a tuxedo. If you decide to wear one, we found that “choosing a thin silver watch that is understated" is always best. If you’re looking to impress the ladies, we would recommend staying away from the top hat and gloves. These are only meant for white tie and tails. Also remember, that wearing gold or leather is not acceptable when wearing a tuxedo. If you're guy that loves cufflinks, don't be scare to wear them. It just depends on what you prefer.
Cover your waist:
Every guy is different and wearing a cummerbund can be a yes or no, depending on what the guy prefers. If you decide to stay away from a cummerbund, we would recommend substituting it for a classy pair of suspenders. The most important thing to know is that covering your waist is extremely important in how you wear a tux. “Wearing a waistcoat, double- breasted jacket or cummerbund means that the only shirt visible is a powerful V at the chest, shooting up towards the shoulders, framed by silk, peaked lapels. No untidy white cloth is left to billow around the waist.“
The tuxedo jacket:
“Tuxedo, black tie and dinner jacket are basically all just different names for the same thing.” With that being said, they can be used interchangeably going forward. “Tuxedo/dinner jackets should only have one button when in single breasted form. Also, a tuxedo jacket/dinner jacket shall never have notch lapels. They are not formal enough for a proper tuxedo. Peak lapels and shawl collars are the only acceptable options, whether single or double breasted.”
In the long run, every guy is different and what makes you most comfortable is the important thing. Remember, dress to impress and wear your tux with confidence! If you have any specific questions, feel free to message us below.
